Sponge or no sponge

Most everybody agrees that bioballs and ceramic rings should be taken out in a nano reef, but I have heard mixed opinions about the sponge. :thinking:
any input is appriciated.

It can be a Nitrate factory just the same. THOUGH it can be cleaned out to reduce it. And you need to clean debris out of it anyways. *shrugs*

I clean mine once a week. I change it every other week. bojik is right it can become a nitrate factory.

I think it's important as a prefilter simply to skim crap out of the water. I have mine cut way down, that way I can skim debris out of the water and limit any potential nitrate problem.
