ok, i got a sponge the other day then when i was getting it out of the bag to put it in the tank it was exposed to air, i read that sponges are not suppose to be exposed, and it was only out for about ten secs., but now parts of it is turning black, what should i do?!?!

you should be ok. what kind of sponge is it? i,ve had my orange tree sponge out in open air alot of times and its fine.i think that the blue sponges are the ones that are effected by open air,because of their large pore size. air bubbles get trapped in the tissue preventing it from filtering for food. if your sponge is looking good so far ,leave it and see what happens.

seems that i missed the part in your post about it turning black. you could use an exacto-knife to trim of the bad parts.the healthy parts will survive.hope this helps

joe5, using an exacto knife to cut away at your sponge will not hurt it. I had some sponge sprout up on my live rock, and when I took it out for a few seconds for maintence, the same thing happened to me......black spot. But it will bounce back as mine did. If you use a knife to cut away the black spot, be sure to do it UNDER WATER!

ok i took ur advice but i found one black spot was all the way around the there was another and i was wandering if u knew if i cut it all the way off except for the ends can it still grow?
or even live?
