Spot lighting?

Im not sure if there is a term for this or not, but what im looking / asking to do is only light part of my tank with high inteseity lighting for corals, instead of the entire thing. :)
The reason im asking this is because im just starting my cycle on my 'baby', aka my new 90g tank. i have been planning this thing for the last 6 months, so filling it up was one hell of a moment lol.
Anyways, i had originaly only planed to go FOWRL just because thats all ive been interested in, you know- get the dream fish and sit back and enjoy to no end. BUT i have always toyed with the idea of corals, nems, etc.. but i dont want to heavily invest in lighting if i never really get into it. so far the only lighting i have over this tank is a basic 4 bulb florecent light fixture that came with the canopy. I realize this is not even close to reef lighting, but it works, so why change it, but i digress. I have 2 24'' coralife dual blub fixtures, both with a 10k and actinc 24W bulbs in them. l. i was wondering if i put these on one side of the tank, could i keep some less needy light wise corals, specificly mushrooms on the upper levels of my rock? because im still in the aquascaping and i could pretty much raise the 'roof' of the rock as high up to the surface as i want.
i honestly dont know much about them, but from what i get, they are some of the more easy to care for? im just looking to see if this would be enough, and if not, how much more lighting would i need? i want to 'put my foot in the door' so to speak to the reef'ing scene, because at somepoint down the road, i do want to get a nem' for my maroon, but like i said, down the road. Also i have toyed with the idea of keeping a 'mini reef' in a spare 10 gallon hooked up to the big system? not sure, but its a possibility i have thought of. ( would the 2 coralife's be enough for that? )
Any advice would be great, thanks for taking the time to read this lol, a bit long winded :O
Edit: i failed to mention tank specs :O
90 gallon display, 30 gallon sump
all RO/DI water / water changes
MRC-RC2 skimmer with 55hp pump
Filter socks + carbon
(new tank, so no water param's yet, but i plan to keep it pristine, like my other tank)

Sounds like you have 24" T5 HO fluorescent lamps
And if you put them over a 2' section of your tank you could keep many of the low-mod light corals.

Thanks for the help GeoJ! Just to clarify, you think i would be good with some low-light needing corals at a 2 foot depth under the two 24'' T5's? if so, that would be very interesting and hard to pass up! :)
Anyways, any other thoughts?

If they are T5HO that would be 4 bulbs look on the bulb it should say. I ran 6 T5HO each with its own reflector over my 50 gal and that was plenty of light.

So a 2 foot length of the tank would be covered by four T5HO bulbs
What are the 4 bulb florecent light fixture that came with the canopy? And can you run all three fixtures?

The florecent fixture is just a typical under-cabinet fixture with typical NO bulbs, no ballast., and yes i could run all the fixtures at once.

Also, whats the thought on a QT tank size for a small juvi yellow tang? i have a 20 high, and long on hand, and if need be, i could get a 30/29, but i dont want to if i dont have too ;)

I was also thinking about a T5 fixture aswell. would something like this be a good idea? : http://www.ebay.com/itm/T5-GROW-LIGHT-COMPLETE-w-T5HO-BULBS-2-4-6-8-lamp-24-48-Fluorescent-Veg-Bloom-/160709546880?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item256b091380#ht_10932wt_1135 Or perhaps something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-30-36-48-INCH-HO-QUAD-6PC-T5-AQUARIUM-SALT-FRESH-WATER-LIGHTS-FIXTURE-/280834022537?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&var=&hash=item4163031c89#ht_3096wt_1159. i figure if im going to even 'dable' in coral, i might as well get something thats worth its salt. also, t8 lamps waste more electricity, correct?

I don't know of the quality of that brand.
If you are set on fluorescent lighting go with 6 T5HO bulbs with individual reflectors
There are some lights that have two or more circuits that allow you to turn on and off groups of light bulbs at different times this would also be a good feature.
