Spotted Boxfish

I just wanted to share my bad experience, in hopes this does not happen to someone else. I purchased an existing 120 gal SW tank from a local store and paid them to set it up in my house. This was to be my "fish only" tank as we already have a 110 gal reef tank. Anyway, this new tank came with a beautiful, 4yr old French Angel & a Pineapple Trigger. Frenchy was a good 8 inches and the Trigger 6 inches. We immediately fell in love with both. GREAT personalites. The LFS got in a Spotted Boxfish, male, and trust me, first time you see one, you want one! So after having this new tank set up in my home for about 2 months, we had the LFS get us the Spotted Boxfish & a Naso Tang. We add them both and 3 weeks later, all fish in the tank are dead. You cannot immagine the crying grief I've had. I found a book on Marine Fish and the Spotted Boxfish was it in. To my extreme amazement it says this... "it is the most notorious boxfish for exuding ostracitoxin when stressed, which can fatally poison an entire tank." OMG if I had known this, I would never have put it in my tank! I am so exasperated at the LFS. I was never even given any hint to this. Now I have to take the whole tank down and clean it completely to start over. The money is not the issue. We love our fish and want so desperately to do the right thing for them. Our children have been put into such stress over this as well. French was truely a part of our family. I hope anyong thinking of getting a Spotted Boxfish, changes their mind. Some fish should just not be kept in a tank with other fish.

No offense meant, but this is why it is so important to research first and not be tempted to impulse buy.So sorry for all your losses.

I agree fully. I do not intend to criticize, as I feel very bad for your losses, but that is why everyone on this message board emphasizes researching everything, from fish to inverts to corals to equipment, before you buy it. Good luck in the future and I am sorry for your losses.

sorry for the loss of several beautiful fish......
just remember...."i did my research and talked to the LFS owner" is considered an oxymoron.....now if you go to the same LFS to get more fish ect youll know why he sold that boxfish to you.. i'd take my 150g of business elsewhere... or get alot of store credit out of the owner of that one.
