sps and water current

can anyone tell me what the ideal current is for sps corals. and also, how long does it usually take for them to become use to the tank, you know, for them to open up fully. i only ask because i was given a huge peice of purple acropora for free yesterday! my water is perfect, and my lighting from what i read is good too(300 watts of vho over a 29 gallon).

Lots of current. SPS like about as much as you can give them.
You say your water if perfect, but how does it compare to the water in the tank it came out of? Is salinity the same, temperature, pH, Alk, Calc? If these values are different from one tank to the next, that could make a difference.

it's almost like the tanks shared the same water! it's that close. the only difference is that the tank it came from used a skimmer and calcium rector. my tank uses a refugium with miracle mud and calurpa. i use liquid reactor to maintain cacium and alk. the coral is aquacultured and is now about 7-8 inches accross, and 2-3 inches tall. it's a real beauty and for the price(free), i couldn't pass it up! this is my first shot at sps so i hope it makes it.

Hey I have an idea, frag me a piece and send it to me and I will do some experiments and tell you what type of tank conditions it likes ;) Good luck with it. Make sure to keep you Ca in check.

will a hermit crab crawling on the colony cause any problems other than it closing up? Its not eating anything, just climbing.

My grabs ocasionally crawl over/bump into/ much off mine and they are still all fine. Just make sure that they are all firmly attached and keep um away from anything that might sting it.

In my tank the acro that is in lots of current is spead out and the brances are thin and whispy and the acro that is in low current the branches grow close together and are thick.Just My expierence.
