stacking live rock

Curious as to how everyone stacks their live rock? How close do you stack it to the back or do you stack it against the back? Do you set it on the tank bottom and put sand around it or do you put in the sand then set the rock on top of the sand? Or do you set up some kind of plastic piping to set it on? Just wondering which is more beneficial.

Actually, you have pretty much hit on all the possibilities. I put down some base rock first, then sand, then placed the live rock.
I didn't stack it against the back because I wanted to have better water flow and access, but, eventually, as more and more gets added to the tank, I might end up piling things up against the back of the tank.

Mine is about 3 inches from the back to improve water flow and give the fish more room to hide and swim

my rock is centered front to back to give the fish room for swimming and also lets them hide behind the rocks in case of accident like ( BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT ) i prefer to put my rock on the bottom of the tank then put the sand in after that , my reason is simple no dead spots of sand under the rock , critters from the rock move into the sand adding more life to the sand easy , if u make a mistake and get a digging fish u will not have all your rock topple down on you, either way works it is a split between people those are just my reasons, plus i put 100% live sand in so either way i will be spendingmore on LS or i will be burrying some LR

I learned the hard way not to set it on top of the sand, my gobie was tunneling and toppled the rock, not only a mess of rock, but one quashed gobie.

I AM DEF NOT AN EXPERT ON THIS BUT IF YOU FRAME THE BOTTOM WITH 1/2 INCH PVC PIPE /ELBOWS, THEN LAY EGG CRATE FLAT
ACROSS THE PIPE WOULDN'T YOU GET A BETTER CIRCULATION FROM UNDERNEATH AND THEN IT GOES UP.
