Staining a DIY hood?

So I built a hood for my 55 gal today. Turned out pretty nice. I stained it and I am wondering if I should varnish it or some type of sealant?
Its pine so I am not sure if I should worry about moisture or something. Will varnish harm the tank in anyway? I mean as long as its just on the hood?

It will resist moisture alot beter if you varnish it. It shouldn't affect your tank.

Wow! Talk about nice, looks great. I'm jealous, too bad that color wouldn't go in my house.
