Staining/refinishing wood on a stand and a canopy????

Yea.
Sand the wood down with real fine sandpaper. Make sure it is totally smooth. Then clean it off real good. Any dust will make a rough surface. Tack cloths work good for this.
If you are staining softer woods (pine, poplar, ect) treat it with a pre-stain. This will allow the stain to produce a better color.
For stands and hoods, I personally use Polyshades by Minwax. Has the stain and polyurethane blended together. Just be sure to rub the finish down real well with fine steel wool between coats and clean the surface of dust and steel wool shavings.
