Can stainless steel be used in fish tanks?I ask because mag pump have ss screws in them and do they make check valve that don't have metal spring in them?
techrider62
well depending on the type of ss it is, the salt water can make the ss rust. but it all depends on the grade so im sure if its made for a pump to go in a tank im sure its ok but i would make sure because i know cheap ss will rust out bad and then it will mess up everything.
nooooooo no metal in your tank ever...even if it says its ok...why risk it...when they make plastic stuff that cant possibly rust.
do what you want...but my opinon its a baaaad idea
best of luck

I have never ever had a problem with a mag drive pump and the metal screws, and I have never seen them rust. I have had mag drive pumps in tanks for years and not a spot of rust on them.
in my tank i have the following.
two razor blades
three small screws.
and a musket ball that came in on a piece of live rock. all of them have fallen back in the tank behind the rock work while fraging or somthing. there is no way i was tearing apart my reef to find them so i left it alone. i have zero problems
i am not saying that you should put that there on purpose i'm just saying that it will be fine.
when i took down our old tank i even found a quarter and a nickle lol. what can i say i have two little kids.
I had a mag 9.5 in a sump for a year without them rusting. Here something to note. Metal will corrode less in the water than when exposed to salt outside it.
