well, i've painted my stands with exterior grade primer to help reduce water damage, then a top coat of high-gloss black on the exterior because primer white is just ugly. it seems to be working, since i always end up splashing water everywhere, and the water just beads up on the paint and wipes off easily.

Ill be honest you would be better going w/ a non laquer finish on the stand and going w/ a flat color. The reason that I say this and you can try it for yourself. Have you ever left a cold pop on a wood dresser and go pick it up in a few seconds and see the ring it leaves in the Laquer. Imagian if that was salt water from a water change that you just did. but the inside of the stand you can do what ever you want that wont be seen unless you have glass or Plexiglass doors on the stand to show off the inter workings. But this is just MHO

This is the info I was looking for I felt that when you spill inside with bare wood after time it might smell or evem more of a problem maby mold
I was thinking gloss in side for two reasons one is to clean it would be a zip and two is for light the brighter the better.
on the outside I am going to use a clear urathaine base that is designed to be sprayed on boats to protect the actual paint
