star polyp takeover

The green star polyps I have are growing quite rapidly, and on the same rock they are on is a leather coral. My question is will the star polyps takeover and kill my leather coral?

I don't think it will kill the leather. Besides what kind of leather do you have? As far as I know, star polyps do not sting. And although they grow very rapidly, I don't think they'll grow on top of your leather. Probably it'll grow around it :D.

Not likley as they are not agressive (dont sting), they do grow fast, however. If it is a concern you can always trim them back

I have to disagree with the above, IME star polyps can and will sting, depends on the particular coral though, I have them in both of my tanks, in one that star polyps sting certain acros they come in contact with, in another they are stinging a colony of Zooanthus sp. They can also grow quite fast under the right conditions and take over rocks and other corals. If possible I would suggest isolating them to a single rock that does not come in contact with other rocks. HTH

place small rock frags around the growing colony, and eventually when the colony overgrows the rock, cut the mat and take it to your lfs! a good way to keep your colony trimmed down, and make some moola on the side. i do this with my stars, xenias, and yellow zooanthid polyps!
good luck

My stars are touching my leather. The corel is is just not growing in that one spot. It is not stinging it for sure. The corel is a toad stool with the long polyps(can't remember the name). It will grow up and over very soon.
