maurice, what is the star in the second pciture. I have seen them in the surf the last two years while in St Augustine?

The second star Maurice shows is Astropecten articulatus. It would be similar to the sand sifter star in the hobby...and perhaps with as dismal a chance of long term survival. But it may take to spot feeding so who knows.

Everyone has such cool starfish! I cant wait to get one for my aquarium. I've heard they need really established aquariums so I'm going to wait a couple more months before I get one. I really like the blue linka's but from what I've read they are very difficult to take care of. Can someone explan why?

Sorry i have been busy and not responded back, but as said above he is a common star to the gulf.I picked him up myself awhile back, and yes he loves to be spot fed.He likes shrimp and boy can he eat some.

They are very sensitive to sudden changes in water quality and parameters (osmotic shock), so they need pristine water conditions.
Their diet is basically unknown and rarely do they take to spot feeding. So they need tanks with lots and lots of LR...generally at least, IMO, 150lbs but this is probably a minimum amount.

Is that your brittlestar?
It has incredible damage to the disk...in fact most of the animal is gone.

It wasn't like that when we got him....a couple days after we got him his "head" started to open up and now his is splitting in half.....
I thought he was reproducing....I read that they will split to reproduce - is this not true? What do I do?????

No, most brittlestars do not reproduce in this fashion. Most brittlestars that do reproduce by splitting have 6 arms. It is possible that it might survive it, but it is also possible it won't. That is some extreme trauma. Perhaps ate something too large. But I won't rule out acclimation shock. How long did you acclimate it? What is your specific gravity, ph and alkalinity? What are the other inhabitants? It still appears to be behaving relatively "normally" all considering, so it is not a loss yet.
