Start up Sand and Live Rock

A friend of mine is planning on giving me his used sand and live rock in his current running aquarium. I'm a little concerned about acquiring these. Although he has never had any type of disease in his saltwater aquarium it has been neglected. I'm worry about the types of bacteria or the potential of negative things that I'll put into my startup aquarium. Should I be concerned?

Are there fish in your tank right now? If not then I wouldn't worry about it. If you do then you could put it all in a big trash bin or buckets and QT them for a few weeks.
