I have a few questions about starting my tank.
55 Gallon- FOWLR-50 lbs LR, DSB, 120 Watts FO, Berlin Turbo
1.) When i am cycling my tank do i run my skimmer or does it matter???? If not what type of filtration will be used when cycling, wont my tank get filthy w/o any filtration????
2.) I know in Dallas its hard to find southdown, i know that some used QuickCrete, I was just wondering if i could use the type of sand you use for sandblasting which is probably the finest sand available??????
3.) Will i be able to grow any type of coralline algae or corals w/ the lighting i have now. 120W FO on 55 Gallon???????
Thanks,
Mark

Yes, run your skimmer, however, it will, most likely, not pull anything out of the water until it is broken in, and then should start pulling a lot of gunk out.

Once again, I believe you can, however, check to see if it contains silicates or asbestos.

IME, coralline growth is more dependent on water chemistry. Water quality and supplement levels must be up to par. As for corals, you may be able to get by with some mushrooms.
