Steel wool in the fish tank

I have a DAS aquarium. This tank has a overflow filter box built into it. I have added a few things to it like a separate sump and a good protein skimmer . But it has a slow trickle filter and a fast filter. The trickle filtre is to remove nitrates..which I have a problem with. I havn't used this filter for a while and I remember that the instructions said something about putting a small peice of steel wool in the bottom of this filter, I know that I have to feed the filter once and awhile with eaither sugar or alcohol...but I don't know what the steel wool is for.... Any Help???? :scared:

Well I Guess so .It uses Anerobic bacteria to get rid of the mitrates. It's supposed to work pretty well. And It did befor I took out the filter when I put in a sump, and now I want to use it again because it really did work but I never put in any steel wool.

I had a DAS tank. The instructions tell you to put steel wool in the slow nitrate filter for iron(spelling bad).
What I did and you need to do (totally IMO) is to forget the instructions!
Do not use the bags etc. Put a small light over the "slow n. filter" and add some sand, about 4" worth, turning it into a refugium. Add some caulpra in it also.
The skimmer sucks!! Maybe get a hang on. They suck also but it is better than what you have, ;)
I had a 100g DAS for over two years setup and had pretty good luck with it like this. Hope this helps
sorry for the bad spelling...
