Stirring sand/cc

I am so sick of looking at this brown algea!!!! What would happen if I stir the sand and CC? would it make things worse? Let me know, Thanks :)

Don't stir it, especially with CC in there. You will most likely get a dangerous nitrate spike. You can lightly vacume the brown algae off of the surface without disrupting the substrate.

I did get a diamond goby this morning!! I also got a pistol shrimp. the shrimp has burried himself and the goby has been under the same rock since I got it. will the goby come out and play later or what? thanks

I just posted to your other question about the goby. When my goby started getting to work, My tank looked like crap for the first 2 to 3 weeks until the sand started getting clean. Don't worry you will almost hate him for making your tank clowdy. once the sand gets cleaned or cleaner you will think he's the best fish in the world. you could also get some sand sifting star's too. they do a pretty good job also.

In a 55g. I'm looking to get a good cleaning crew for my tank and I have been considering a cucumber for the sand.

Hello! do not know about cucumbers- but we have a goby who constantly sifts our sand and we have a sand sifting star who does a good job also(have had him for over 2 years) and keeps our sand pretty clean! Also horseshoe crabs are good - but hard to keep-we also have alot of spaghetti worms(not sure where they came from) they also do a good job of cleaning sand. :happyfish :happyfish

Well I broke down and got a crew, tonight.
I got:
1 sand sifting starfish
1 emerald crab
5 turbo snails
Well see how it goes with them
update: The crab started work immediately

Man I leave this site for a bit and come back and i see tons of bad info lol..
First off Sand sifting stars die because of 1 reason...lack of food.
Unless you have over 100gal tank, chances are you don't have enough food to support a sand sifting star.
Even if you did...a sand sifter would decimate all living things in your sand bed..basically turing it to Dead sand... (besides the bacteria of course)
The way to get rid of alage on sand is not with sand sifting..but to increase flow in the tank. and reduce Phosphates..

Not true about sand sifting critters. My star does not destroy any good stuff-neither does my goby-we have had them for about 3 years -150gal with fish-live rock-some coral. There probably are some sand sifters that might not be good for tanks not sure which ones-- research research research. :happyfish :happyfish

I did say "tanks under 100gals" tanks with larger systems can support a sand sifting stars...also tanks with deep sand beds.
By the time the star gets around, the stuff he ate has regrown..

What do you think they "SIFT" not for the fun of it...and the things they eat...are beneficial... so how can you say "they do not destory any good stuff"?
The correct statement, is "they do not destroy enough good stuff to cause a problem" in a BIG tank...
Make no mistake, they do destroy benfeical creatures in your sand bed..Along with the goby and horse shoe crabs.

Not going to get into an issue over this-I am happy with what they do in my tank....clean sand - stable parameters-we just need to offer info to people who ask and they can formulate an opinion based on information given-again-research is the key! Like I have said -I am always learning....I think we all are.... :happyfish :happyfish

fair enough...i do want to clarify...they are not all bad...like you said..they just need to have the right tank and setup.
I have had many...
