storm coming - what if power goes off?

We have a big storm coming tomorrow here in the northeast.

If the power goes off for an extended period of time, what is the best way to keep the tank warm?

Is there such a thing as a battery powered aquarium heater?
Thanks

Pray........... Sorry I couldnt resist. I live in South Florida so we have to deal with Hurricanes. I have a generator in case the power goes out for an extended period and an inverter in my Ford F-250 I can plug up to 400 watts into. I read somewhere you can buy battery powered powerheads to keep circulation up and airstones also.

Being in the St. Louis area, we've had a lot of expierence with that over the last year.

I don't thing there are battery powered heaters, But what you can do is,
Best option: Get a generator, this can run you tank, and no worries.
Next option: Go to Wal Mart or Auto store and get a power inverter. This plugs into your cars ciggarette lighter and you can plug your tanks heater and/or filter in. This will run these as long as your car runs. Like I said not the best option, but it will do.
Other option, pick up a battery powered air pump, this will at least provide air to your tank. If it is too cold, which it probly will be, take some blankets or a sleeping bag and wrap it around your tank, it will help hold the heat in for a little while. And pray that it isn't off for too long. Once the power comes back on check the levels in your tank, You don't want to raise the level up to fast, way to stressful on your fish. Had someone here boil there water and put it back in the tank to try to get the tank warmed back up. Definately not a good idea.

If you have a gas stove, would it not be possible to stock up on hot water bottles, and keep warming the water and surrounding the tank for as long as possible/wrapping it all with blankets and/or towels???? IDK, just trying to be creative?

a 5500 watt gen will back up most houses with a 30amp 2pole rec and cost $500. last oct we lost power in buffalo for an entire week in an ice storm.the gen not only saved my fish(freshwater then)but also my basement from flooding and me from freezing!

Hi! I was thinking about this issue recently myself. I got to thinking that I had something in the trunk of my car that should do a decent job. Black & decker makes a product called an electromate powercenter. It jumpstarts you car, has an air compressor & electrical outlet. I have the 400 model. Although I have never used it to run my tank, I am sure that it would do the job.
I have not recharged it since last Jan. & in that time We have used it to jump start vehicles at least 3X, filled a car tire, several bike tires & basketballs. I just checked the power level & it still shows 3/4 left of battery. You can also recharge it from your vehicles 12v dc. It is really light compared to a standard jump starter & if you shop around the price is just under 100$.
Just a thought... But if mine can go that long & do so much, it should be able to run a heater & a pump or two for an extended period of time.

I was in wally world the other day and near ther garden center they had a 2000 ish watt power generator for under 200 dollars. That is pretty cheap I'm sure it is cheap quality but not a bad idea for our expensive fish. I'm going to pick one up as soon as the irs gives me back my money interest free!

LOL I feel your pain, you are getting hit harder than I am with the snow. I am in the lower Catskills and have no backup either. I have a battery air pump, thats all :scared: Luckilly I also have a wood stove so I can keep the house warm enough to keep the tank temps up. I hope neither of us lose power
