Stupid question of the month (lighting)

I've been shopping for lights and I keep seeing retrofit kits. What are they? What do I need to use them? Do I need to install them in a hood? Dumb question, I know. Thanks.

Retro,s are the best way to go(IMO).They are a kit that contains all the components, you just have to put them together..They are VERY simple. And if you have a canopy, these kits allow you to mount them where and how you want...

Hey Mr. Salty. I have a glass top with 2 36 inch hoods sitting on top. Each hood holds a 24 inch NO florescent light. I want to add a 72 inch VHO system that has two bulbs. That way I'll have 330 watts from my VHO system and 40 watts from my two 24 inch NO lights. If I buy a 72 inch VHO retro-fit kit, I have no hood to install it in. Do I have to buy a hood or can I build one. I saw some plans on the internet where they used a white plastic rain gutter for a hood. What do you think? Thanks.
