I feel that I have to get this off my chest, so I want to address something that bothers me. I am not someone that places a whole heck of a lot of posts, but I do read a lot of them, and I do so almost every day (I am sure there are many of you that do as well.) But, I can't help but notice that sometimes people are just downright snotty and rude, especially to the new guys.
I am dissappointed to see that most of the snotty responses come from experienced people, as if they had forgotten what it was like when they were the new guy. People are quick to fly off the handle when someone states something that may, to some extent, reflect a certain amount of ignorance.
I understand the importance of research, and I try to do as much of it as I can. After all, the well being of your investment as well as the living organisms that we decide to bring into our homes are at stake here. No different than the responsibilities of any other pet. I would like to stress to the new guys that research is very important; don't skimp on it.
But, I have been around the block long enough to realize that not everyone learns the same way. Some people just downright suck at research. Some people learn better through interactive research. That's what makes this site enjoyable. The flexibility to learn basic information and keeping skills from experienced people, and the ability for experienced people to share advanced techniques between each other make for an interesting and enjoyable board. Seeing an experienced aquarist respond to a newbie with a snotty answer or a relative lack of patience; well, you can get that at the LFS. It really takes the enjoyment out of learning this way. It's like saying to the people that learn this way the best, that "You're not good enough to keep saltwater specimens!!" That may be true of some of the people that post on this board, but I don't think that is for anyone else on this board to decide. I am sure that is not the intention, but come all you guys that have been doing this for quite some time, you're like the encyclopedia of this board, the knowledge, experience, and the basic backbone of this board.
It's the snotty responses that the newbies read that lead them to believe that they need to start their post with "this may be a stupid question, but...." People are afraid to admit to their mistakes, post things they aren't sure is the right way of doing something, ask "STUPID QUESTIONS" all because of a response someone else got for trying to learn from someone with experience. It's like taking away an avenue through which someone could possibly receive some of the best information they may ever learn keeping saltwaterfish from a place that he may have the ability to learn it best.
Anyway, this goes out to all the new guys..... don't feel that any of your questions are stupid; THEY'RE NOT STUPID. For every one person that may think it is, there are a handful that wanted to ask the same thing but didn't because they were AFRAID of feeling stupid. Now, they just may learn something without having to feel that way.
To all the guys that have a wealth of knowledge to offer...... lighten up a little bit and try and remember when you were asking the stupid questions. I am sure you don't want the newbie to feel like the guy at the LFS made you feel. And you know the one that I mean; the one that made you swear you will never step foot in that place again. Don't take the fun out of something that should be nothing but fun.
Just my thoughts. No harm intended.
