Stupid Suction Cups Destroyed My DSB

I woke up this morning and my 1100gph powerhead was pointing straight down. It covered my brain coral and of corarse blew sand EVERYWHERE covering a couple mushrooms and ricordia.
I need to do a water change, I think.
On the same subject, a couple of my blue reef damsels always are trying to make their home at the base of a rock and my DSB. I hope they are not stirring it up enough so it releases all the bad stuff.
My ls is actually quite new just after Christmas. I switched over from cc to ls.

I have never did a water change when this happen and everything turned out fine but i get it depends how much crap gets kicked up. i wonder if there is any other solution other than th ecups to prevent this from happening,

I just did a post to see some closed loop systems, that would help. It just cost$$$$. but not too much.

The one thing I learned is that you can NEVER trust suction cups.

I did sort of a mod with my Maxi-Jets, I took the big clear suction cup from my alage feeding clips and replaced one of the suction cups with that. It has never fallen and it stays in place.

That is why I replace my suction cups yearly. I also clean the glass where they go with a razor blade to make sure it sticks clean.
Another trick I have used (only for NEW suction cups though) is to take a VERY small amound of cooking oil (corn oil) and put it on the inside of the cup with my finger. I am talking about just enough to make the rubber shine. It helps form a seal and keeps it in place. Any oil that goes into the tank gets taken up by my overflow and the skimmer will take it out. It is harmless in that small amount anyway.

I do the same thing by scraping off all algae, slime etc before I put the P/H on the glass. I also move them every few months and clean the suction cups and glass. It's just good maintenance to practice. Yet another thing to add to the list of chors to keep a reef system up and running.
