Hey, it could have been worse. He could have got the new STI. I am a Master Diagnostic Toyota Tech (highest cert level one can reach through Toyota) as well as "Gold" (third highest of four levels) Subaru certified. I am a Toyota line tech and do Subaru back up. I have replaced pistons in four short blocks in the past month and a half. The FTS (field technical service) rep is acknowledging a mojor problem right now. Upon disassembly of all motors so far I have found that the ring lands have collapsed between the piston rings. Could be worse..the 2.2l and 2.5l naturally aspirated Subaru motors are NOTORIOUS for head gaskets. The job pays 8.2hr flat rate. I have found (after doing atleast 200) pulling the motor entirely is the quickest way
CONGRATS!
EDIT: after reviewing my post, I can see how it may seem derogatory. This is in no way intended, and I sincerely mean it when I say congrats.

Correction, the 2.5 liters were known(prior to going to sohc) for head gaskets
That would be pre 2000. Just wanted to clarify.

My 05 (before I rolled i
^&) was dynoed at 476 at the wheels. These cars are incredibly easy to mod and retain reliablilty for the most part. Best advice I can give you is, learn to drive it in stock form, then upgrade the components that you think are lacking. I know you will love it

I am not going to mod out the car, I like it sock, maybe ill tent the windows or something. lol I do know that I am going to do a trunk swap and maybe... maybe change the exhaust.
Ray J Neal - I HATE the way the new STI's look, thats why it took so long for me to get this one is, I wanted to find a good 05-07 with low miles for not a tun of money, even though she was not cheep lol
subielover - yes 05 I think I might go to jail if someone hit me ...

rebelprettyboy - I like " AMERICAN MUSCLE " but not as a daily driver. American cars over 1990+ I think is worthless hence " the mustang "

By your user name I assume you are a Subie fanatic. One can not argue however with the amount of head gaskets I have replaced on post 2000 MY 2.2l and 2.5l NA motors. In fact, I just got one in yesterday. It is so common we usually have the gaskets in house and I can turn them out in about 4 hours. Thats motor out, resealed and back in. You may be correct that it is more prevelant in the pre 2000 MY vehicles, but can not argue (based on my professional experience) that it is also existent in the post 2000 MY. Subaru has a TSM (Technical Service Message) about the revised gasket and the still non-arguable rate of failure. TSM's differ from TSB's as these are made available to technicians only and is not considered by the manufacturer to be public knowledge.

It's kinda cool to see what a bag full of money can do to a rice burner but I think I'll take a 5 liter ford or small block chevy and save the money.
