Submerging heaters

ok, you must all be getting tired of me by now but here's another question: Can heaters be submerged beyond the "maximum water line" on the heater unit (I bought two Tronic 100 watt heaters for my 46gal bowfront). I cant get them very high with the suction cups because the rim of my aquarium juts out at the top and interferes with the top of the heaters. I could also just keep the water line lower or I could file down the rim a bit to accomodate the heaters. Suggestions?

if you judt bought them ... i would take back and get fully submursable ones...then there no prob with it sticking out of tank...
