Submerging powerheads?

I just bought two Hagen Aquaclear 402's for my 46 gal but the pumps say they can't be completely submerged. The guy at the LFS said that's a warning only printed in Canada (because of different standards) and that tons of people run them submerged. Is that true? Also, should I have gone with Maxi-jets?
Help from my neighbours to the south would be greatly appreciated :) I just spent $3000 on my setup after two months of research and I really want to do everything right.
Thanks

I use Hagen Aquaclears 802 for 3 yrs submersed, ho problems....never heard of a powerhead that you couldn't submerge, but I'm not an equiptment person either. I have the maxijet 1200's also which are good, too.

thanks for the help, I decided to return the aquaclears because of their bulk and lack of attackments and I bought two Maxi-jet 900's instead.
