Substrate and rock

I was just reading some books on setting up the tank. I know it says to add the rock and then substrate to make sure everything is stable, but these books were written as a 1-1.5 inch base. Well as we know it's a little outdated and I am going with a 4-6" base. So my question is...would it be better to add say 3-4" of substrate as a bsae, then add the base rock and live rock, then add the remaining 1-2" to help secure it? Anyone have any experience with it either way?

Jag-
This is one of those questions that doesn't have a real answer. I added all of my substrate and then my rock. I did push it down a little to make sure it was secure.
Good luck-

if your planning on anything that can tunnel in the sand like pistol shrimp goby pairs or engineer gobies deffinetly put the rock in first then the sand. it keeps things from tunneling under them and toppling your rocks.
