I understand i should not use CC or LS for my substrate, but is there any type of substrate which could do the trick? small plastic balls or shavings from a PVC pipe?
No need for that. Just paint the bottom of your tank, on the outside, dark blue or black. If you want, you can add a couple of cups of substrate from your main tank to seed the QT.
