Substrate for bottom dwellers?

I know crushed coral is bad (for many reasons), but, as compared to sand, how bad is it for bottom dwelling fish (i.e.: Mandarin Goby)?
What are long term affects?

well crushed coral builds up crap lol and i'm guessing is not as comfortable to move on for bottom dwellers.
