substrate?

my girlfriend wants to put substrate in here freshwater aquarium. I dont know if that would be a good idea. any ideas.

I have seen people do it. I think there is a Ph problem with the tank if you put it in there. I have heard of problems because of it. I wouldn't do it. There is all I know.
