I noticed yesterday my yellow tang had some orange or brown on the body and fins. Later my clowns died and soon followed the tangs and damsels. Water levels were tested and everything was fine before they stareted to croak. I now have no fish and am wondering what has gone wrong. I have had the fish about one month. No problems until today. Help!!!

How old is your setup and why were so many fish added at once?
What did the spots look like? Were they a solid color or was the color due something on the fish, a film, mucus, powdery or dusted appearance?

The yellow Tang had a sort of (rust??) colored spots that suddenly appeared and started killing them ang the others as well. The other fish were already in the tank. I acquired the tank and fish from a friend. The Tangs were the only new additions to the tank. Well now out of all the fish I have one damsel. I think I might have found the culprit. My children placed a marble that they had in the pool into the tank. The chlorine from the pool wiped them out? Is it possible to go into sudden death due to one? :confused

I don't think the problem came from the marble. How old was your tank when you put the fish in? And what size is your tank?

No the marble was not the problem. If you can give more info about the "rust", it might help. Until you determine what happened here, I strongly suggest you add no more fish to this tank.

First problem I see is that you mention "tangs" as in more than one.........IMO a 55 is too small to support even one tang. Second thing is, it seems that you added several fish either at the same time or without much time between adding each fish. Whenever I add fish to my system. I wait AT LEAST 2 - 3 weeks before adding another. This gives the bio-load a chance to adjust. Did you quarantine the fish before adding them to your main tank? If not this could also be the source of your tank crash.....

I waited two weeks before I add fish. I check the levels constantly. Especially before I decide to purchase new fish. The rust suddenly appeared on the sides of the Tang. It just appeared. And before I could even think of what to do the Tang was gone and started the crash of the tank. Out of all the fish I had I only have one Damsel left. I haven't added anymore fish. What do I do to get the tank started again? What shouls I do first. A little scared to put money into this tank if the fish are going to croak. Any Suggestion? Thanx.

has there been any kind of cleaning that went on in the area of the tank...sounds also like you have one of the worst scenarios...unwatched young children...there could have been almost anything else that they might have added w/o your knowledge
