sump confusion

starting first reef tank soon. want to use a sump, but dont totally understand. I get the basic function, and the way to build, but i dont get the no filter media idea. please help thanks

The only filter media in my sump was filter floss. If you have an ample amount of Live Rock, you do not need any other bio-logical filtration. Just something to remove floating particulates.
