sump drain line plumbing

can the drain line from the tank going to the sump have a loop in it? Is it syphon fed or gravity fed? I don't have enough room between the tank drain and the top of the sump to go straight down. Thanks for all of your help.

I need a pic of what you are talking about...
If you are talking about just putting a couple of PVC elbows... then sure. If you are talking about a P trap - maybe. I've never tried a p-trap before. lol.
An overflow is gravity fed. Do you have an external overflow or an internal overflow?

Thanks but I've already decided to put in a few pvc elbows. There will be a section that runs parallel to the tank to accomodate a shut off valve so I hope it will still drain into the sump. Thanks for your input. This plumbing shouldn't be so hard. I hope I'm not making it harder than it really is. My problem is that I only have about 3 inches from the bottom of the tank drain pipe to the top of the sump pipe. I really appreciate your input.
