Sump for a 40 gallon reef?

Is it possible to use a 10 gallon tank as a sump for a 40 g. breeder reef? I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and possibly just fill the sump with LR and LS, a heater, skimmer and the pumps? Is that doable without having all those partitions and things that people seem to always be talking about? Or would a 15 or 20 be better suited? Do you really need to have it partitioned?

I just had a discussion with MrSalty about his sump setup, and he said if you have macro algae (caulerpa, etc) in your sump then you need some sort of divider so that the plants don't get sucked up your line back to the tank... If your going to do a sump I'd recommend going that route.... read the post "Mr Salty - Question on your sump"
