Sump/Fuge Question

I have a 60 gal divided into 4 sections: the first with the filter socks, the second with the skimmer, third is the fuge and fourth is the return. I have the fuge filled about a third with macro algae and carbon in mesh bags at the base of the baffles so that the water is forced to pass through them before it goes to the return chamber.
My question is this; How do I ensure that I am getting the maximum effectiveness from my sump/fuge? Or, in other words, how do I properly use it to achieve it's maximum potential?

I'm no expert and you may already know this, and I believe you are doing just fine so please don't think I'm talking down to you.
When your macros grow be sure to cut it back and remove the extra. The macro absorbs the nitrates to grow, and as you get rid of the extra macro growth you are getting rid of nitrates. It's called harvesting.
Rinse out your media once a week, I don't use anything but a skimmer in my sump I am just going by what others have said on the site.
Change any carbon at least once a month (I change carbon every two weeks, but I have a loaded soft coral tank)
