Sump instead of Fluval or Filstar?

I will be setting up a large (125-200 gal) tank soon, and am trying to find out some neat things to make it work well. Will a properly built and operating sump take the place of a Fluval type canister filter? I have searched on these boards to find information, but you must read between the lines to know if other filtration, besides protein skimmers, are necessary. I still have not figured it out, and I have never seen one for home use. The lfs seems to have one on their stock tanks, but I've just barely caught a glimpse of it. It is not beyond my abilities to build one, I just need to know more, and their inherent advantages. Thanks.
