Sump media

what is the best "media" to put in my sump? also is partitioning out the sump for a fuge more beneficial than "plumbing" one separately? I have used the blue bioballs in the past (ten yrs ago) had pretty good luck back then, but now Im reading that they are nitrate factories? this hobby is much more enjoyable now that these forums are available, saves on the hit/miss/spend problems,

and yes you should seperate out a refugium area from the sump.
that way the refugium area can remain almost all full and the water level varies in the smaller sump area. Which makes adjusting easier as well as having more refugium water for pods and macros.
