Sump or not?

Trying to get everything for my tank in one shot.
I could just buy a protein skimmer along with a filterfor around $150-$200 or use a sump.
Just not too familiar with smps besides some basic reading.
I plan to use liverock in my 40 gallon AGA, not sure bout LS or not since it seems like lots of aquariums I see don't bother with it....
Will I still need a protein skimmer with a sump that has LR or bioballs in it? Are Bioballs or LR better in a sump? If I still need a protein skimmer then what advantages does a sump have besides more water capacity and a place to hide heaters and etc...

i would say screw the bio balls get enought live rock 40-55 lb i would say live sand is good too,...sump adds more water volume to your tank which makes the water parameters more stable. IMO sumps are a must

I would also highly recommend a sump... but it does nothing to replace a skimmer. Skimmers are very good tools which any tank would benefit from.
