i have a 55 gallon tank with a custom made,10 gallon sump. my over flow is a plastic setup.it is a siphon unit with 2 bulkheads in water.but im noticing that it keeps burping while draining down to sump,it's a weird noise, and since i just made everything it keeps me up at night, because dont want no floods or dead fish.i have a rio 2100 powerhead if that matters...and how do i get the sump water lower so i can have the tank full with enough water to reach the brim?

it sounds like your overflow bulkheads are creating a siphon. You might be able to adjust the angle of your prefilters on your bulkheads to get rid of you burps. But if that doesn't work here are some more involved options. You can put a valve on your return pump to slow it down, which should slow down the over flow speed and prevent the siphon (hopefully). You can increase the size of the tube running down to the sump from the bulk heads. Also, you can put a "T" on your bulk head to allow air to get sucked into the sump instead of water, but that might create a a slurping sound.
I have a 55 w/ a 20g sump / fuge and I have a 1 1/2" ID tube running from my over flow to the sump and a Mag5 for the return. I had to install a 90 on the over flow to get rid of my slurping sound.

my drop line from over flow is in almost a "S" Shape do u think i should make line a little tighter or it will be a smooth fall, well like a steep hill? and my return from sump to tank is a little extra, too should i shorten that also?

My overflow line is a very straight "S" but I don't think it matters much since some people install hard lines and 90's and what not to slow the water down to reduce the splashing in the sump. I've even heard on this board that you don't want a straight shot into the sump. It makes the water move too fast and you have a better chance of creating a siphon / suction and bubbles and splashing in your sump.
The shorter your return line the better since it means there is less head pressure on your return pump slowing it down.

You need to raise the height of your drain pipe on the backside of your overflow. You could also just raise up the entire overflow.

Ok, first of all it looks to me like you have a ouside overflow, not a drilled tank correct? Hangs on the outside of you'r main tank???? with the littler box with the teeth inside??? let me know if that is the way it is and then i'll tell you what i did to prevent that noise PM me if you want to.

Yeah man it is a outside overflow box.i dont think u consider it has having teeth though.it has 1 big piece that hangs in water and it has two holes which suck the water to out side to go down drain pipe

Will the overflow hold siphon if the pumps is turned off, if not you need a standpipe in the back overflow box.
