I currently have a 55g reef tank. I'm am starting to look at upgrading to be able to house more and bigger fish. I would like to have atleast a 125g tank and have it pre-drilled so I can make my 55g the sump. My question is does adding a sump take place of a filter? If I made the sump would it still be best to have a canister filter/power filter?
Thanks

the sump will be the filter for your tank. it is best if you have a refugium and a sump. they can be seperate tanks joined together with bulk heads and pvc or you can have the fuge as part of your sump.

you can use your old filter to run carbon in once in a while but you won't need to have it running as part of your filtration.
