Sump Questions

Hi. I really want to have some corals, but I'm scared to try it without at least a sump. I have looked at many threads about sumps but still do not completely understand how it works...
I would only be able to have a 10 gallon sump under my tank (46-gallon) but at least I can hid heaters...etc.. The things I don't understand are:
how do I get water down to sump
what kind of pump to take it back
dividers within sump
so I don't really understand much at all...
any help would be great!

I am new to sumps myself, but here are a couple of things I have learned. The best way to get the water to the sump is two ways. Either drill your tank and plumb it, or the easiest way is to buy and overflow box. This unit contains two small boxes, one fits just below the waterline in your main tank and the other hangs over the back of your tank. there is a suction/syphon hose that takes the water from the box in your Display tank and into that box on the back where gravity takes over and drops it down into the sump. Then you have a pump pump the water back up.
Check out my thread a couple of lines down about "Is this how to hook up a sump" or something like that. several people are answering my questions about sumps/refugiums. Might help you too.
