Sump Questions

Hi everyone who knows about the reef setup I keep trying to learn about and try eventually. (if you don't know what I'm talking about, go to http://pages.prodigy.net/cathy110/page0006.html )
I was wondering if a sump would be helpful (I have an old 10gal I would use). I know that a sump goes under your tank and you can put your skimmer and heater in there, but is the main purpose to hide the equipment? Or what else does it do, and what's the easiest way to set one up? I don't think u put
LS in there, or do you? (As you can see I'm not too bright when it comes to DIY projects, so please post in simple terms.)

There are a number of advantages,1-better filteration,2-increse your water volume,3-you can do your water changes there,4-any dosing,or medication is also done here so it mixes before reaching the main tank, not to mention the things you mentioned. STEVE
