sump/refu?

why do people hide their refugium? why not make it into a diffrent tank? some people are doing mangroves but there has to be other things that are presentable and fit the water filter needs too.any one got any bright ideas?

That is an interesting idea but I think the majority of sumps are found beneath the tanks for the simple fact of being able to use gravity to drain down. I'm sure you could place the sump/fuge to the side and slightly lower than the display tank. Anothe reason for having the sump hidden is that is usually where most of the unsightly equipment gets grouped together.

this is more like what I'm thinking about but I'm thinking that what you put in the tank is going to make all the diffrence form haveing a sump and having a new tank because the hole point of a sump is to increase stability and if you start to put (at least most fish) fish in there you will be increasing your bio load and in truth you will have a new tank not a fuge but there are lots of intresting algees and other things that eat trates and stuff.
If any one has any ideas of things (beside mangroves) I'd really like to here about it

correct. a lot of fuges are full of chaeto and the skimmer, bioballs, etc are in the sump. if you are using the sump/fuge as a nitrate trap its going to be an algae zoo with equipment all sticking out which is why most people hide them. we are gonna have chaeto in our fuge but it will be contained.
for us the sump/fuge is all about increasing our total water volume to buffer rises in levels. most of what we will have in there will be scavengers so i dont expect much worry over increased bioload unless we add a bunch of fish.
