Sump/Refugium Question

I plan on having a 55 gallon tank as my sump/refugium for my 90 gallon FOWLR tank. Should ALL of the tank water flow through the refugium (after going through the skimmer), or should I put a ball valve on the drain line and only have part of the water flow through the refugium and back to the tank (skipping the skimmer)?

I would recommend doing what ever is easier. but thats just me. i find that saltwater aquatics are complicated enough.
