Whats the difference between a sump and a refugium?

A sump is a place to add extra water volume, it's where your water from the display runs through for filtering. Its also where you can put a skimmer and other unsightly equipment.

A refugium, although set up kind of the same way a sump is...doesn't hide equipment or filters. It is a safe place for tiny critters (copepods, amphipods, isopods and such) to breed and grow uneaten and undisturbed. The flow of water usually grabs a few to be washed into the main tank...where they make yummy treats for the display critters. The tiny critters often feed on detritus, which makes a natural filter, these critters live in live rock (that's why it's called rock) but fish soon pick the rock clean if they don't have a place to hide and breed.

You can set up a refugium right in the display tank, or in a tank next to the display, or in a chamber in the sump tank, or use a HOB type as well. Also it's a great place to keep macroalgae where fish can't eat it up.

Thanks Flower. That does clear things up. Could you read my thread in fish discussion? I think you could answer some questions there too. I think I posted it in the wrong forum but I don't know how to move it without rewriting the whole thing.

Let me get really really nerdy even as flower already gave the good answer.
A refugium is a protected area where macros/pods/etc are protected from display area predators.
a sump is the lowest container in a multiple container open system.
(you can see how those apply to flower's comments and other posts here).
Now consider a two tank system
a display tank on a counter top with another container in a shelf above that display.
And just to make it even more confusing place add a partition (egg crate) across the back of the lower display tank.
With that system which is the sump and which is the refugium?
Ans the display tank.
Hopefully that didn't throw you a curve ball.

I looked in fish discussion, and all I see from you is one on the coral banded shrimp. The name of the thread may help me find it. I'm not much use on setting up sumps and refugiums...beaslbob however can...ask him your question, since he already posted on this thread....lick on his name and PM him.

LOL...I could only tell you what the difference is. Acrylic51, Al&Burke and 2Quills helped me set mine up. There are a bunch of others that know their stuff too..Saxman, BTLDreef to name a few.

Sorry about that Flower. It's in "Fish Only Tanks". Told you it's in the wrong forum. I couldn't even remember where I put it. It belongs in this forum..... I think. lol

LOL...I found your thread, I am not a sump expert...I was no help at all. Where the thread SHOULD have been was the DIY section, those guys love to tinker with equipment and make their own systems.

Actually, it did help quit a bit. Both of you helped. I did post a question in the DIY section. Thought maybe I could get some insight from you.
