Sump...sump...SUMP.

Alright, I'm working on getting myself a sump. I'd love to have someone build me one, but I'd rather love to know how to correctly build one.
My tank is 155 gallons, and I believe we were trying to get a 40 gallon breeder to work from (small, I know, but better than nothing.)
I already purchased a model ES100 pm skimmer and collection cup, along with a mag 12. My tank cannot be drilled, so I'll have to work on getting an overflow box, most likely one around 600gph, or whatever I can find close to that. I have the correct valves to insure the correct amount of flow as well.
My question is this, How do you determine how large either compartment is? Like the intake, refugium, and return? How do you know how high to make the baffles, and how far apart? I also want to run the mag 12 out of the water to reduce added heat. Can someone help explain how to do this?
I apologize for all the questions, I simply am begging for someone to enlighten me.
Thanks in advance for all the help!
