Sump systems

I am interested in getting a 75 gallon in the future and do not want all the silly tubes, wires and equipment that hang on the back and sit inside the tank.
How do you go about setting up a sump system? Must you have a hole drilled in the tank or is there another way? Can someone explain both options?

If you're looking to eliminate the tank clutter, then I would suggest getting a tank that has a built-in overflow box, predrilled for a sump. This way the only plumbing you would actually see in the tank would be the return line, which is usually very unobstructive.
