sump with macros?

Im thinking about just using a sump with Macro algae and some LR. Is this a bad idea? I just dont have alot of rom underneath my stand for a refugium and a sump. I need the sump more than the refugium..so i just compromised with a sump with macros and LR. Any problems with this?

I think the reason most people avoid this is because the macro can start to grow into your pump and be a real pain to keep it from clogging. I would try to section off even a small part of your sump for macro--either with plexiglass, acrylic, or placing a small rubbermaid tub in there.

That is what i planned on doing. I was going to section it off with baffels and keep the macro away from the pump.

I combined the Sump and Fuge into one modified 29 gallon and its working very well for me. Divided into 3 sections. First one is for the water entrance, where I also put the heater and may move my hang-on skimmer once I figure out thow to modify it. Second section is the fuge area, with DSB, macros and liverock. Third is a return section with my Mag Drive 7 pump.

ya just partition off some for a fuge inside the sump, check my posts kip posted a good diagram on how to do this, how big of a sump/fuge tank could you fit in your stand, a 40 breeder would be good

IMO a 10 is not nearly big enough for a skimmer, return pump and a partition for macros and still leave enough space for some power outage overflow space, check kips diagram its a good design

would it work ok with the fug in the middle thats the way i did mine but i don't have it t off into the fug. it just goes in the one side through the fug and out the other side.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I don't have a real good diagram, but heres a picture of my modified 29 gallon. I thought about making one outta a 10 gallon too, but decided to upgrade the whole display from a 30 to a 40 Breeder. While you wouldn't get as much benefit from a 10 gallon, I don't think it would hurt. You might even be able to squeeze it and an external pump in under your display. That would give you some extra room. Just an idea.

the problem with putting the fuge in the middle is that its gonna get too much flow if you're using a medium to high flow overflow

my overflow box is from a 75 gal. aqua clea slim line wet/dry filter i guess its rated 300gph could i just put one of those gate valves on it to slow it down i already put one on the return side after the fug? I put my live sand and macros in it today and did a water change with r/o water i got from the store i'm gonna try to keep doing the changes with that till i can get an r/o. i just want this ugly brown stuff to go away. thanks
