A sump works equally well in a reef,or a fish only tank. Not only can you equip them to filter your water,,,but they make a great place to hide all the things you dont want too see in your beutifull tank.Like the heater,,,skimmer,,,and thermometer. They also make water changes easier. And topping off for evaporation is also done here so you done disturb the tanks occupants with fresh water.

I'm the new guy here. I have a 80 gal reef and about a 40 gal sump. The sump is where all my "unsightly suff" is hidden in the cabinet. Skimmer, heater, pumps etc. it is very easy to maintain with a sump as was metioned previously. Topping off h2o and adding supplements and so forth. I don't know that it is a must....but I enjoy the ease of maintainence it allows and the hiding of things I don't want distracting from my actual tank.
