A sump is nothing more than an extra water containment area usually set up underneath an aquarium where you can place equipment, provide the aquarium with various types of water filtration, add top-off water to the tank and perform other maintenance tasks. All this means that you can have rocks, sand, macro algea, skimmer, heater, part fuge, part sump, part wet/dry, just about anything that you can do to it. Lots of combiantions and designs and functions.

I just had a general question on the basic setup of a sump.. I am starting a 30 gallon tank, and was thinking of putting a 10 gallon sump underneath. What kind of pumps or hoses or anything would I need to make this work, and do I need to do anything to the big tank itself?? I am clueless about sumps, I have never used one, but they seem to work for everyone, and I want this tank to be perfect.
