sump

RIght now I'm filtering my 92 gallon tank with a 600gph filter that hangs off the back of my tank. I believe its a Super King power filter system. I would like to switch my tank over from a fish only tank now to a reef tank. I would also like to switch to a sump. what is involved in filtering with a sump. I would like to put it together myself. What would I need. I would need an empty aquarium (how big?), a pump to pump the water back to the tank (how many gph?), but what else? Is there any schematics on sumps on the internet that I can look at? If i do have a sump, do I need any other kind of filtration too?

Here is the diagram for mine:

For my 75gal. I use an overflow than can handle up to 800gph, a return pump in the sump that pumps about 450-500gph at 4.5ft. of head, 6-7gallons of media, and my sump size is maybe 15-20 gallons or so. I use a SeaClone protein skimmer which sits inside my sump. You will also need some sort of mechanical filtration through a pre-filter on your overflow box or something else. You also may want to include activated carbon chemical filtration.
Hope this helps you.
