a 10 gal would be fine or if you could fit something a little bigger underneath your main tank. a overflow will work just get a return pump and your ready to go. if you did go bigger you could divide it and make a sump/refuge.

go as big as you can. I first started with a 5 gal tank, now I am waiting for my acrylic to arrive so I can start on my custom sump/refuge. The new one will utilize every last square inch of my stand because I got tired of working with only a 5 gal tank.

I have a mixture of everything in my refuge. I started out with some LS and over time I have added various pieces of LR. I now have a 2" sand bed with some aruba shells on top of that and my pieces of rock that I use to attach frags to on top of the shells.

offer to buy the lr rubble from the bottom of you lfs tank for half the price he charges for larger pieces. this will give you stuff to add frags to, great atatchment points for various macros, lots of nooks and cranies for pods to grow, and imho more eye candy than a bare sand or mud bottom.
