Sumps are not absolutely necessary, but better to have for the reason that you increase the amount of water you have. The more water the less chance for problems to get out of hand faster. Also the sump can house your items like a protein skimmer, heaters, filter boxes so they are not looking bulky in your tank.
And yet another plus to having a sump is the ability to add a refugium that can be a help for your nitrate levels.
All of these are beneficial in the long run and more used in reef tanks than FO but nonetheless a worthwhile investment considering it is not a lot of money to set one up.
